BACKGROUND:

The Health and Vital Statistics Office (HVSO) was established through the Vital Statistics Act of 2006 (PL15-50) which was signed into Law on March 14, 2007. The Vital Statistics Act gives the HVSO the authority to administer systems of vital statistics throughout the CNMI. In the CNMI, access to vital records is restricted by statute (1CMC § 26020). All marriage and divorce records are kept at the CNMI Superior Court.

PURPOSE:

The HVSO is defined as critical in maintaining, developing, analyzing, and disseminating information used to plan and evaluate health programs and to monitor and report population health status to the CHCC management and/or the Government of the Northern Marianas Islands.

The mission of the HVSO is to document and provide accurate records and data concerning vital events to the Government of the Northern Mariana Islands and other stakeholders in an expeditious and friendly manner.
